Welcome to the 4th International Hypothermia Symposium 2011!

On behalf of the organizing committee, we welcome you to Tokyo, Japan, and the 4th International Hypothermia Symposium (IHS), September 15-17, 2011!

This unique scientific event will be of great significance for basic and clinical scientists from all around the world, interested in the expanding field of therapeutic hypothermia. The venue of the International Hypothermia Symposium rotates among the continents, and has so far been located in Tokyo, Miami, and Lund, all hosting groundbreaking and highly successful meetings.

We are all honored and thrilled at the occasion of hosting the 4th IHS in Tokyo.

We began prospective clinical research of induced hypothermia for patients suffering out-of-hospital cardiac arrest from 1996. Our strategy for induced hypothermia incorporated extracorporeal blood cooling methods, as pillar cooling methods, with two induction methods: post ROSC cooling and intra-arrest cooling. We are currently conducting two multicenter studies, and we believe we can present clinical results which would be of interest to all of you. In terms of independent research, we conduct research on matters such as cooling duration, using biomarkers prior to inducing hypothermia in order to ascertain the outcomes, and we present our findings every year at ReSS/AHA.

We are looking forward to vigorous debate on a broad range of topics relating to induced hypothermia, with primary themes this time including: 1) Induced hypothermia for cardiac arrest patients―particularly whether rapid cooling improves outcomes, 2) Induced hypothermia for head injuries—particularly whether prolonged cooling improves outcomes, 3) Induced hypothermia for cerebral apoplexy—particularly its application. 4) Ongoing clinical trials, and 5) Prognostication.

We aim to create a system of medical treatment so that even one more patient might be able to return to society, and to spread induced hypothermia throughout the world toward that end.

Through our continued scientific testing, we are confident that induced hypothermia will become the global gold standard.

With Best Regards,

Ken Nagao
